He edited The Ornithological works of Arthur 9th Marquis of Tweeddale (1881) and also wrote a Guide to the birds of Europe and North Africa (1923). The sentence written in the book might be an interesting factoid for a casual birder, but it fails to deliver the kind of information I want to give to my students. Zimmer p588, Wood p566: "The information in this excellent work is derived chiefly from a collection of nearly a thousand skins of birds". As a scientific institution, part of our job is to preserve a record of life on Earth, both for edification of the public (think the Farish Hall of Texas Wildlife and the Frensley/Graham Hall of African Wildlife ) and for the maintenance of reference collections used in research (our study skin specimens stored off-site).
