Fine landscapes, high peaks, and vast seascapes engross me completely instead of stimulating creative thought. All disciples could learn much from such an analysis; time and space, however, do not permit. On ten Monday afternoons from 18 April, we'll be going through the opera scene by scene, looking at the musical language as it relates to the unfolding drama, with plentiful comparisons between performers on both sound and DVD recordings.

Considered in the context of the subsequent National Socialist embrace of Wagner’s music and his family’s friendship with Adolf Hitler, Wagner’s use of pagan materials supports the common view that he was, like the Nazis, a neopagan. With a lot of support from Giacomo Meyerbeer, this was accepted for performance by the Dresden Court Theatre in 1842. There is no indication that any of this ever reached Berlioz’s ears, and it may be remarked that Berlioz on his side never tried to discourage Liszt from championing composers other than Berlioz himself.
